Planting Green into Cover Crops- Effects on Soil & Crop Production
Planting green is a new cover crop management tool that involves planting the main crop into a still living, usually massive, cover crop. The cover crop is then typically (although not necessarily) killed with herbicide a few days later. We will discuss our research with planting green of corn and soybeans into different types of cover crops.

Dr. Duiker is Soil Management Specialist at Penn State since 2000. His work on development of sustainable no-tillage systems contributed to the increase in no-tillage from 23% of planted acres in 2004 to 66% today in Pennsylvania. His work on no-till systems is helping farmers to use cover crops and more diversity in their crop rotations. His work on cover crops has included evaluations of cover crop species, planting dates, nitrogen value, and different cover crop management options (among which planting green). He is currently involved in studies on integration of grazing in no-till systems as a way to increase soil health and profitability.
