The 'New' Crop in Town; A Revival of Hemp in the Midwest

2019 was the first year we saw “large” scale production, with 5308 acres registered to grow hemp. However, 2019 was also an extremely difficult for Indiana farmers across the state. This talk will focus on what we have learned from previous research at Purdue University, what we saw this year with increased production, and what it all means for the 2020 growing season.

Marguerite Bolt is the hemp Extension specialist at Purdue University. In her new position, Marguerite serves as the point of contact for those interested in hemp production. She completed her master’s degree in May 2019 in Dr. John Couture’s lab. Her research interests include plant-insect interactions and chemical ecology of hemp.
