Slimy Slugs and IPM - to Conquer Your Slugs You Have to Think Like a Slug
According to many no-till growers, slugs are among the most challenging pests they face, and numerous growers have reported that slug problems appear to be getting worse in recent years. We will discuss some of the challenges associated with managing these mollusks in no-till crop fields. We will also address some of promising slug-control strategies suggested by our research, including beneficial roles that cover crops may play for slug management. We will also consider the potential that neonicotinoid seed treatments, a ubiquitous, preventative insect pest management tactic, may have the potential to exacerbate slug problems in corn and soybeans. Given the spotty nature of slug outbreaks and the limited availability of chemical management options, biologically inspired management tactics deployed within the framework of Integrated Pest Management is our best hope for overcoming slugs.
