Short-term Forages That Work Well As Cover Crops and Feed for Livestock, Too
There are many adapted small grains, brassicas, and legumes that can be used as a cover crop and provide forage for livestock. Several short-term crops will be discussed that fit corn, soybean, wheat, and livestock farms when used as a cover crop with the intention to be grazed or machine harvested.

Keith Johnson
Keith Johnson, Purdue University Professor of Agronomy, is a native of York, Nebraska. He was introduced to agriculture as a youth and the family has great pride in the farm today. He was an active member in 4-H and FFA. These positive experiences resulted in his attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and majoring in Agronomy and Animal Sciences. Upon completion of the Bachelor’s Degree, he went to Purdue University and received his Masters and Ph.D. degrees. His area of specialty is forages. His career has been spent at Purdue University. The multiple benefits that forages provide society and the opportunity to work with and learn about many plant species provide day-to-day challenges and a satisfying career.
