The War Against Weeds in Drought
Drought can influence many aspects of weed control throughout a growing season. Herbicide performance can suffer in drought years due to many environmental and biological factors. Rainfall, air temperature, and humidity all play important roles in herbicide performance. Weeds in a drought will generally have deeper germination depth, thicker cuticles, altered leaf angles, and reduced growth rates that can reduce herbicide efficacy. Drought also increases the risk of herbicide carryover into the following year. These topics and other considerations for weed control in dry years will be discussed in depth.
Speaker
Joseph Ikley
Joe has been an Assistant Professor and Extension Weed Specialist for North Dakota State University since 2019. He has state-wide Extension responsibility for all crops except potato and sugarbeet. Management of herbicide resistant and other problematic weeds are a primary focus of his Extension programming. His research program focuses on managing difficult to control and herbicide resistant weeds in corn, soybean, and dry edible beans.
